Subject: SDSU 2018/19 Budget Update

This is the second in a series of informational memos about the SDSU Operating Budget. It provides a status update on the FY 2018/19 budget process and information about the impact of Chancellor Timothy White’s recent announcement regarding tuition levels.

On April 20, 2018 Chancellor White announced that tuition levels will remain unchanged for the 2018/19 academic year. We have been planning conservatively and assuming there would be no tuition fee increase. The chancellor’s announcement does not change the direction of SDSU’s FY 2018/19 budget.

State allocations
Anticipated allocations from the state will not fully support campus mandatory cost increases, such as employee compensation and benefit obligations. The allocations also do not provide funding for enrollment growth or additional support for Graduation Initiatives 2025, a system-wide initiative to increase graduation rates.

However, our continued practice of conservative revenue budgeting and higher summer enrollment will address the FY 2018/19 budget gap. We will also be able to provide some base and one-time funding to support campus priorities for strategic initiatives and critical support needs.

Looking ahead, without adequate funding from state allocations or a tuition fee increase, the FY 2019/20 budget will be more challenging.

Next steps
Campus budget committees have been meeting and will present FY 2018/19 budget recommendations to President Sally Roush next month.

SDSU will continue to advocate for adequate state funding to support the CSU. If you are interested in participating in advocacy efforts, please contact your state representative and urge them to support a fully funded CSU. Click here to find your representative.

Thank you for your efforts in support of the university. We plan to send another update after President Roush approves the final FY 2018/19 budget.
